Being mum for kittens

Despite a slow start this year, kittens are starting to arrive at APROP. We have had 8 in the last two weeks. The latest three babies are only a couple of days old and were rescued from a local factory where they were in danger. Separating tiny kittens from their mother is not advisable or in the best interests of the kittens. They are usually much better off being looked after by their mother. But in this particular case it was the safest solution for them.

Fostering tiny new born kittens is not for the faint-hearted or those who need a good night’s sleep as they have to be fed every couple of hours, 24 hours a day, for a while. But some heroic people do volunteer for that, thank goodness, although not as many as we would like or need.

Fortunately many of the kittens that arrive at APROP are a little older and are either bottle fed only during the day or are starting to eat solid food. It is still a lot of work as kittens need regular feeding and attention, but it is also very rewarding and can be great fun.

APROP provides foster carers with support and advice and provides equipment and food if necessary.
